Silver &
Gemstone Care
Tarnishing
Silver has the highest reflective
quality of any precious metal and in order to maintain its natural beauty, it
must be cared for properly. Silver tarnishes even when it is exposed to air, so
it is no surprise that it can also affected by other everyday products that we
use; body lotions, perfumes, nail polish remover, hairspray, washing-up liquid
and cleaning agents such as bleach and ammonia. Take off your jewellery when you
go in a swimming pool. Your silver gemstone jewellery may be subject to
permanent damage or discolouration by some of these elements, making them dull
and lifeless.
Storage
Tarnishing on silver jewellery, when
worn on a regular basis, usually does not occur. Storage for a prolonged time
causes silver jewellery to tarnish. The best way to store your silver jewellery
is in a pouch, as this will stop it becoming scratched. If you are intending to
store it away for sometime, you can place this pouch inside a dry airtight
plastic bag or container.
Cleaning
A silver cloth is the best way to
remove tarnish from jewellery. Please rub gently. Some silver clothes may harm
certain kinds of gemstones. Always read the cleaning product's instructions
before use. If there is stubborn tarnish, please seek advice from a jeweller. Do
not use any other cleaning instruments, such as a toothbrush, as they will
scratch the surface of the silver.
Please follow this guidance to enjoy
the pure brilliance of your silver for many years to come.
